Marigold & Sugar - Dia de los Muertos Earrings

Marigold & Sugar - Dia de los Muertos Earrings

$65.00

Siobhán designed these earrings to celebrate Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. Día de los Muertos is celebrated from November 1st to 2nd. This is a beautiful Mexican tradition where families warmly welcome the spirits of their departed loved ones for a brief reunion filled with feasting and joyous festivities.

The marigold flower in these earrings represents the belief that these flowers guide spirits to altars with their vibrant colors and smell. The sugar skulls represents the departed souls.

Siobhán has always found similarities between this celebration and the Celtic Pagan festival of Samhain in Ireland, a time when the boundary separating the realm of the living from that of the departed becomes gossamer-thin. Offerings of food and drink were presented to appease the spirits, ensuring the survival of both people and livestock through the impending winter. It was also a period for remembering and honoring ancestors and loved ones who had crossed over. Belief held that the souls of the deceased revisited their homes and families, prompting the setting of a place at the table for them during meals.

In Christian traditions, a similar commemoration takes place on All Souls Day, observed on November 2nd, to celebrate the lives of those who have passed away.
